Introduction
Presentation
Panolog Ointment is an oily liquid, yellow to amber in colour. Each ml contains:
Triamcinolone acetonide BP | 1.0 mg |
Neomycin base (as sulphate) PhEur | 2.5 mg |
Thiostrepton | 2,500 units |
Nystatin BP | 100,000 units |
Uses
PANOLOG ointment is indicated for the treatment of acute and chronic otitis externa (including those cases complicated by Pityrosporum (Malassezia) spp. and Candida albicans and the ear mite Otodectes cynotis), anal gland infection in dogs and cats, interdigital cysts in dogs, eczematous dermatitis, contact dermatitis, seborrhoeic dermatitis. It is indicated in the management of dermatological disorders characterised by inflammation, particularly those caused, complicated or threatened, by bacterial or candidal (Candida albicans) infections and other conditions susceptible to corticosteroid-antibacterial-antifungal therapy.
Clinical trials have demonstrated that PANOLOG ointment is effective in the treatment of the ear mite, Otodectes cynotis in the dog and cat. The mode of action is uncertain as none of the components in PANOLOG ointment have recognised acaracidal activity.
PANOLOG ointment contains a combination of the antibiotics neomycin and thiostrepton for broad spectrum activity against bacteria including E. coli, Proteus, Pseudomonas and staphylococci (including penicillin resistant strains), nystatin which inhibits many yeasts and yeast like fungi including Pityrosporum (Malassezia) spp. and Candida albicans and triamcinolone acetonide a steroid with anti-inflammatory, anti-pruritic and anti-allergic activity.
Dosage & administration
Frequency of administration is dependent upon the severity of the condition. For mild inflammation, application may range from twice daily to once a week; for severe conditions, PANOLOG ointment may be applied as often as two to three times daily, if necessary. Frequency of treatment may be decreased as improvement occurs.
Otitis: Clean ear of impacted cerumen. Inspect canal and remove any foreign bodies such as grass awns, ticks etc. Instil 3–5 drops of the ointment. It may be advisable to instil 2–3 drops of a local anaesthetic into the ear prior to cleaning.
Infected anal glands and cystic areas: Drain and then fill gland or cyst with ointment.
Other dermatoses: Clean affected areas removing any encrusted discharge or exudate. Apply the ointment sparingly in a thin film.

Contra-indications, warnings, etc.
For animal treatment only. Keep out of the reach of children. For external use only.
PANOLOG ointment is not indicated for the treatment of deep abscesses or deep seated infections such as those of the lymphatic system, for which parenteral therapy is indicated.
Anti-inflammatory corticosteroids, such as triamcinolone are known to exert a wide range of side-effects. Long term use may induce severe side effects. Dosage in medium to long term use should therefore generally be kept to the minimum necessary to control symptoms.
Following cessation of treatment, symptoms of adrenal insufficiency can arise and this may render the animal unable to deal adequately with stressful situations. Consideration should therefore be given to means of minimising problems of adrenal insufficiency following the withdrawal of treatment eg dosing to coincide with the time of the endogenous cortisol peak (ie in the morning with regard to dogs and the evening with regard to cats) and a gradual reduction of dosage.
Locally applied steroids may cause thinning of the skin.
Use in pregnant animals should be avoided. Administration in early pregnancy is known to have caused foetal abnormalities in laboratory animals. Administration in late pregnancy may cause early parturition or abortion.
Corticosteroids may delay wound healing and the immunosuppressant actions may weaken resistance to or exacerbate existing infections. In the presence of viral infections, steroids may worsen or hasten the progress of the disease.
Gastrointestinal ulceration has been reported in animals treated with corticosteroids, so precautions should be taken to prevent the patient licking the topical treatment.
During a course of treatment the situation should be reviewed frequently by close veterinary supervision.
